Additional The Ultimate Gift Information

Red Stevens owned everything a man could ask for, and he generously supported his entire extended family, asking nothing in return. Near the end of his life, however, Red realized one thing: in giving his family everything, he had given them nothing. Years of being provided with unearned incomes had caused them to become greedy and selfish. Yet there was one who wasn't completely lost. One who still had the potential to change and to learn. That one was Red's great-nephew, Jason.

This is the story of Red Stevens, a self made man who realized, almost too late, the terrible mistake he had made. It is the story of Jason Stevens, as he makes a year long spiritual journey down a path that will lead to the incredible inheritance that his uncle has planned for him. And it is also our story, as we travel along with Jason, learning lessons in the most unexpected ways - lessons that we can learn and apply every day, making "The Ultimate Gift" our own.

What Customers Say About The Ultimate Gift:

It has nothing to offer other than some basic stuff that everyone knows and hopefully practices. I am extremely disappointed by this book. I would probably recommend it for a kid.

Simple writing and a sentimental message makes this book a nice "gift" book for graduation, a milestone, etc. Bottom line: don't expect much, but enjoy. A nice book, but fairly basic and extremely predictable. Borderline 3-4 stars, but its uplifting message (and from reading the book jacket, pretty remarkable author) gets it bumped up to four.

I don't know why it took me so long to discover this story or the movie that followed, but it is not only a good read and a great lesson, but one that can be enjoyed on a multitude of levels. Would make a great Sunday School series or even Sermon Topics, but even better as an in home lesson or conversation starter with young adults.

Stovall has apparently not mastered the art of showing vs. telling, to me a big no-no in creative writing. The book would have been so much better if it was from Jason's viewpoint, or at least in the third person following Jason so we could actually see what he goes through. All the reader gets is Jason's report of what happened over the course of the month. I saw the movie and loved it, so I sought out the book and bought it. I was very disappointed in this book. I loved that the movie actually followed Jason around so we could see how he struggled through each of his "gifts." The book, however, is written in first person from Red Stevens' lawyers point of view. Instead the book came off as being preachy and sentimental, with Jason talking about how much he learned from each experience.

It is a amazing book and I could relate to some parts in the book.
